Tasmania’s Premier has promised action on road safety within four weeks, as part of his campaign for a re-elected Labor government in March next year.
David Bartlett sent out the rallying cry at the ALP’s state conference yesterday, eight months out from the state election.
Mr Bartlett took a swipe at the opposition’s latest road safety policy, to only allow school students behind the wheel if they have good attendance and behaviour records.
He told the conference he would not resort to knee-jerk or headline grabbing changes, but the current road toll was unacceptable.
“We have a responsibility to do more, because every life lost on Tasmania’s roads is an avoidable tragedy,” he said.
“All of us, every Tasmanian driver, has a responsibility to act safely on our roads.”
But driver education is still one of four options the premier wants advice on, making driver training an assessed school subject.
He wants driver education training to go towards a student’s TCE certificate.
